Kolkata to Omkareshwar, distance and route

About 1260 km in a straight line from Kolkata to Omkareshwar in Khandwa (Mandhata island). That figure is a straight-line estimate, not a driving distance. This page pairs it with the way people actually make the trip: the train through Khandwa Jn, a flight into Indore, or the road.

The straight-line distance, and what it is not

The number is about 1260 km, measured on the globe between Kolkata and the temple town, then rounded to the nearest ten kilometres. It is a straight-line estimate.Treat it as a way to compare trips, not as a route: the road, the rail line and the air path all bend, and each one runs longer than this figure.

This is the same kind of number as the span on the map page. It tells you whether Kolkatato Omkareshwar is a long day or a multi-day journey, and it is honest about being a calculation rather than a measured route.

Routes to Omkareshwar from Kolkata

Train via Khandwa Jn

The railhead this site treats as the nearest is Khandwa Jn, about 70 km from the temple town. Over a long distance the train is usually the calmest option: an overnight run from most big cities, then the last leg by bus, jeep, auto or cab.

Flight via Indore

The nearest airport is Indore, about 84 km away. Fly if the trip is short or the distance is long, then take a cab or a train for the rest. At a small airport the last departure of the day can be early, so plan the arrival side carefully.

Road

River island on the Narmada. On a road trip the last stretch into the temple town is usually the slowest, and the hill and forest approaches can close in heavy monsoon rain or winter snow. Check the local road status the week you travel.

What Omkareshwar's own source says about coming from a city

Rail. The trust names Khandwa Junction, which it describes as connected all over India by express and superfast trains, and Sanawad as a nearby station with MEMU trains to Khandwa. Omkareshwar Road, the old metre gauge station 12 km away, has had no trains since January 2023 while the line is converted to broad gauge.

Air. The trust lists regular flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities.

Road. The trust names the Mortakka bus stand, with regular buses to Indore, Ujjain, Khargone and Khandwa, and notes a taxi from Indore or Khandwa as a common option.

Train numbers, days of running and flight schedules are not printed here: they change with each timetable. This block records the approach the source describes, and the straight-line figure above is the only distance on this page.

Approximate city coordinates used here

The straight-line estimate uses these approximate coordinates, which are the city centre to one decimal place. They are not survey points, and they are only for this calculation.

Before you book the travel

Oct to Mar is the comfortable window, and Open all year. Bridge and boats both reach the island. Decide the mode first, then the day: a train needs booking weeks ahead in festival season, a flight is flexible but the last leg is not, and the road is the one that the weather can change.
