Varanasi Jn is the station this page treats as the railhead. It sits about 5.5 km from the temple town. Its Indian Railways code is BSB.
The district describes Varanasi as an important major rail junction served by trains from all metros and major cities, and names direct connections including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Indore, Guwahati, Prayagraj, Lucknow and Dehradun. It gives the station enquiry number as 135.
Varanasi is the airport this page treats as the nearest. It is about 25 km from the temple. On a long route the good combination is usually a flight to the closest well connected airport, then a train or a cab for the remaining distance, rather than a second flight or a day of driving.
Airport transfers are where prices are least predictable. Prepaid desks, app cabs and hotel pickups each cost something different, and at small airports the last departure of the day can be early. If you land late, plan the first night in the airport city rather than pushing on.
The district gives Babatpur airport at 22 km from Varanasi and 30 km from Sarnath, with domestic flights it lists to Delhi, Agra, Khajuraho, Kolkata, Mumbai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Gaya, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati, and international flights to Colombo, Bangkok, Kathmandu and Sharjah.
The cities below are the ones the source names as connected, by rail, by air or by road. They are not a claim about every direct service, and no departure times or train numbers are printed: those change with each timetable, so the live enquiry is the only place to read them for your date.
By road. The district gives a Government of India tourist office on the Mall Road in the Cantonment and a regional tourist office at Parade Kothi, opposite the railway station.
Names only, as the source gives them. Train numbers, running days and departure times are left out on purpose, because they change with each timetable.
The district page is the source for this block, not the temple trust: the Trust site carries no rail or air figure, which its own checks entry records. The train names are the ones the district lists. Numbers, running days and departure times change with each timetable and are not printed here.
City temple, open all year. That is the shape of the approach: some temples are a straight drive into a town, others end in a climb or a crossing. Rather than print a highway number that may have changed with the last resurfacing, this page describes the approach and leaves the turn-by-turn to a live map on the day.
The airport at Babatpur is about 25 km from Godowlia by road, measured on OpenStreetMap.
Varanasi Jn is about 5 km by road from Godowlia crossing, measured on OpenStreetMap. Vehicles stop there: the trust has made Godowlia to Maidagin a no vehicle zone, so the last 650 m or so is on foot, through Vishwanath Gali or up the corridor from the river. Autos and taxis wait outside the station; agree the fare before you get in. Car drivers usually park near Dashashwamedh. The trust runs e-carts for disabled devotees, and in Shravan free rickshaws have run from Godowlia to Maidagin for the elderly and children.
Oct to Mar is the season this site plans around, with the mildest weather and the smallest chance of a road problem on the approach.
Open all year. If the town itself closes with the temple, book the last night before the shut and the first night after the reopen, because transport thins out around both.
Mahashivratri and Shravan pull the biggest crowds of the year. Trains and rooms fill weeks ahead, and the last leg into town is the bottleneck.
On the coast and in the hills the monsoon makes the approach harder rather than the visit impossible. Plan an extra buffer day at each end of the trip.
